Why is an eye test so important?
Most people would agree that sight is the most important sense. Regular eye tests are important because your eyes don't usually hurt when something is wrong. An eye examination is a vital health check for your eyes that can pick up early signs of eye conditions before you're aware of any symptoms – many of which can be treated if found early enough.
How often should I have my eyes tested?
For most people this is every 2 years but for some others - particularly younger and older patients - we would recommend more frequent check-ups. After your examination we will recommend a time for your next routine examination. Remember that if you have any symptoms you can be seen earlier - you don’t have to wait for the reminder.
Do I have to pay for the test?
In Scotland the NHS pays for your routine eye examination and also any other appointments necessary to investigate symptoms or to follow up the initial test.
How long does the examination take?
For most people the appointment is 30-45 minutes long.
What should I bring to my appointment?
If you are new to the practice it is helpful to bring your old glasses prescription but if you do not have this we can measure your glasses. It is also helpful to bring a note of any medication you take
When should I bring my child for an eye test?
If you are worried about anything you should come as soon as possible as most eye problems are easier to treat at an earlier stage. In the absence of any problems we recommend an examination at around 4 years old - partly because this is still early enough to fix many problems and partly because it is a good idea to make sure that your child can see well before starting school.
Should I see my doctor for an eye problem first?
No, this is not necessary. We specialise in treating all eye problems - including something in your eye, eye infections, red eyes, loss of vision etc - so are the best place to attend first for the right treatment. These appointments are all covered by the NHS. It is not necessary to see your GP or be referred - you can just contact us for an appointment.
Do you offer same-day appointments for urgent eye problems?
Yes, we keep appointments free to allow us to see patients with problems as soon as possible. Please call for advice if you have a problem.
Do you have an out of hours service?
If you have a problem when we are not open please call for advice. If you leave a message we will be able to reply shortly.
Where can I park?
There is free parking around the practice - you can park for an hour between 9:30 and 4:00 right outside, or on the nearby sidestreets it is unrestricted.
